Salt Field and Salt Museum

In Kitaura, the “Agehama” style salt production—a traditional sand-terrace method—once flourished. “Kitaura Tsuki-no-Shio” (Moon Salt) is carefully crafted over time using these time-honored techniques, drawing from the exceptionally clear coastal waters of the area. We also invite you to try “Kitaura Natural Nigari” (bittern), a health supplement drink containing 92 types of high-quality essential natural minerals.

“Kitaura Tsuki-no-Shio” (Moon Salt)

The Moon, an essential presence for all forms of life. “Tsuki-no-Shio” (Moon Salt) is nurtured by the ebb and flow of the tides, governed by the moon’s gravity, and crafted with the heart and soul of our salt artisans. Kitaura, located in northern Miyazaki Prefecture, is a vibrant fishing town famous for its delicious seafood. This salt is a true treasure of Kitaura, filled with the blessings of its beautiful sea and the mystical power of the moon.
The secret to great salt is, above all, the purity of the seawater. Shimo-Aso Beach is Kyushu’s #1 as being the only beach in Kyushu selected in the Sea Category Special Selection of “Japan’s 100 Best Swimming Beaches” by Ministry of the Environment.
Salt is an essential element for the human body. Our salt is a gift from nature, drawn from the pristine waters of Kitaura and slowly crafted over time using traditional methods. Rich in essential minerals like potassium and magnesium, it offers a mellow, well-rounded flavor that sets it apart from ordinary salt.
