About Kitaura

Kitauramachi, Nobeoka city, Miyazaki Prefecture
Located on the northern border of Miyazaki Prefecture, Kitaura sits within the Nippo Kaigan Quasi-National Park, famous for its beautiful coastline.
Its rugged Rias coastline provides nutrient-rich currents and a favorable climate, allowing the area to flourish as a fishing town for generations, with abundant catches of seafood such as horse mackerel, sardines, sea bream, oysters and turban shells.
Today, Kitaura proudly boasts the largest catch of round herring (Urume Iwashi) in Japan. Combining ancient, traditional fishing methods with state-of-the-art aquaculture, the town is gaining attention as a “treasure trove” of fresh fish and processed goods born from the wisdom of its ancestors.
